Founding Fathers = Great Reads!
As Independence Day approaches, what better time is there to catch up on some great reading about the founding of our nation and the characters that shaped it? Here are some recent titles available at the Southeast Anchor Library that are well worth a look:
George Washington: The Founding Father by Paul Johnson
In this entry of the acclaimed “Eminent Lives” series, Paul Johnson (A History of the American People) offers up this slim biography of our first president, George Washington. Johnson portrays a man with an equally deep reservoir of skill and moral character.
John Adams by David McCullough
Recently filmed as a successful HBO miniseries, David McCullough’s (1776) biography paints a vivid portrait of our second President and arguably most unfairly overlooked founding father. Adams’ keen intellect and integrity shaped our nation. Among other things, McCullough poignantly recounts Adams’ devotion to his wife Abigail and his intense friendship/rivalry/friendship with Thomas Jefferson.
The Great Upheaval: America & the Birth of the Modern World, 1788-1800 by Jay Winik
Jay Winik (April 1865) chronicles the tumultuous events at the beginning of our nation’s history, focusing on how developments in France, Russia, and the United States interconnected and then made the world what it is today.
Happy reading, and happy 4th of July!
