Splash! and Tattoos!

The Pratt libraries have programs to entertain and inform all ages. Roland Park recently had Splash! with Tracey Eldridge to the delight of the under-five crowd and their caregivers.  On Wednesday July 21, teens created their own designs which were then airbrushed on as temporary tattoos.

St. George's Garden Club Flower Show

We had a bevy of beautiful flowers in the library this week when the St. George's Garden Club held a Flower Show here at the library.  Everyone ohhh'ed and ahh'ed at all the lovely arrangements.

For those who missed it, I took a few to show you what you missed.

Enjoy!

Exploring Ireland and Irish Heritage

On Saturday March 13 an intrepid group trekked to the Roland Park Branch Library to join local photographer Denny Lynch for his slide show and talk, Exploring Ireland and Irish Heritage.  In addition to lovely photos of the Emerald Isle, Denny discussed Baltimore connections to Ireland.  There is, of course, Baltimore, Ireland and thus the Lords Baltimore but who knew there was a Dundalk, Ireland?!?

He also talked about his family’s connections to Ireland and shared a lovely letter from his great-great aunt in Ireland to her sister (Denny’s great grandmother) here in Hampden, Baltimore.  Denny recorded an Irish friend reading the letter so we were able to read along on the slides as the Irish lilt filled the room.  What a joy!

Another Poetry Reading!

Bread Alone Book CoverSix people braved the snow and cold to attend Saturday's poetry reading by local author Kim Jensen.  Her collection, Bread Alone, is thought-provoking, political, timely, familial, and maternal.  If you wanted to attend, but were fearful of braving the snow, we have copies of her book for you to check out.  In the meantime, mark your calendars for Saturday, February 5th when Dennis Barnes will join us for a reading from his collection, Shades of Light.

Summer Reading is Over!

BalloonsOn Tuesday August 11th, some 60 children and parents celebrated the end of this summer's Summer Reading Program.  All enjoyed pizza and cupcakes as we basked in the glow of almost 500 children reading over 3700 books during the program's 8-week run.  A hearty congratulations to everyone for such outstanding work!

Teens at the Library

Young Martial Arts Book Cover

If you walked into the Roland Park branch on Tuesday July 14, 2009 you may have thought you walked into a dojo.  As martial arts cries resounded through the branch, five participants learned basic Self-Defense principles including the Power of Voice (also known as shouting).

Later the same afternoon, Teens created their own designs and the designs were then silk-screened onto the shirts.  There were many who “Expressed Themselves” with words, pictures and color.

Keep an eye for other teen programs at the library this summer!

Frogs in the library!

Wednesday, June 17th frogs came to the Roland Park Library!

At this summer's first weekly Stories & Crafts time, Miss Stefanie read Jump Frog Jump by Robert Kalan as well as selections from Sharon Creech's Love That Dog and from Hip Hop Speaks to Children, edited by Nikki Giovanni.  As Miss Stephanie read for an hour (!), the children and parents used paper, glue, markers and scissors to make their own take-away crafts.  And more than a few made a frog.  Here are some of the frogs we made.
