History of the Govans Branch
The Govans Branch opened on September 13, 1921 through the efforts of the Neighborhood Improvement Club of Govans. During the first year it circulated 14, 000 books. By 1941 it had 14,000 users 13,662 volumes and needed more room. On November 15, 1942 a new addition was dedicated, more than doubling the size of the library. At the same time the basement area was expanded to include an auditorium and a stage. The library underwent extensive renovations again in the 1990s and reopened July 10, 1993 as you see it today.
The Govans Branch has always had an active and supportive Friends Group and continues to do so to this day. They sponsor an annual Spring Lecture and Fall Celebration and welcome new members.
