TRIVIA NIGHT 2013

Back by popular demand! Trivia Night! The fall event was a huge success we hosted a spring edition. Members and guests had a fun evening answering fun questions like "What is MacGyver's first name?" and winning prizes including Orioles tickets and gift cards to Joe Squared, Ra Sushi, B&O American Brasserie, TownHouse Restaurant, The Corner Bakery and Brio Tuscan Grille. Private Reception and Tour of the Baltimore Museum of Art's New Contemporary Wing

The BMA recently unveiled its newly re-envisioned Contemporary Wing. Members and guests of the Pratt Contemporaries enjoyed a private reception and tour of the Contemporary Wing with its curator.

Fourteen refreshed and revitalized galleries showcasing masterworks from the collection by Andy Warhol and Robert Rauschenberg alongside more than a dozen new works by established and emerging artists working today. More than 100 objects—including paintings, sculpture, photographs, drawings, and moving image works—will be presented thematically in galleries improved with state-of-the art lighting and new wall and floor finishes.

Members and guests of the Pratt Contemporaries mingled with MSNBC host Chris Hayes during a private reception prior to his public talk. Hayes discussed his new book, Twilight of the Elites: America After Meritocracy.

In Twilight of the Elites, Chris Hayes outlines the effects, and then the cause, of America's crisis of authority, and calls for a sweeping overhaul of the social order.

Chris Hayes is editor-at-large of The Nation and host of "Up With Chris Hayes" on MSNBC.

Meet best-selling author Chris Cleave at a private reception at the Central Library. Cleave will be signing copies of his new book, Gold. A public Writers LIVE event will follow in the Wheeler Auditorium.
Chris Cleave is the author of Incendiary and the international bestseller Little Bee. Incendiary won numerous awards, including the 2006 Somerset Maugham Award. Little Bee has sold more than two million copies worldwide.

The Ivy Bookshop has invited members of the Pratt Contemporaries to a private reception of mimosas and snacks with Bunheads author Sophie Flack and The Good Wife star and Baltimore native Josh Charles.

Sophie Flack danced with the New York City Ballet from 2000 until 2009. She is currently studying English at Columbia University. Bunheads is her first novel.

Josh Charles, Emmy award nominee and Baltimore native, attended the Baltimore School for the Arts. He has starred in dozens films and television shows and is best known for the roles of Will Gardner on The Good Wife, Daniel "Dan" Rydell on Sports Night, and his early work as Knox Overstreet in Dead Poets Society and Iggy in John Waters' Hairspray.

Cocktails and Private Tour of the Meyerhoff Photography Collection

Neil Meyerhoff is a photographer with over 30 years experience, the last 15 years specializing in panoramic photography. During this time, he has studied with Sally Mann, Alex Webb, Steve McCurry, Larry Fink, Jay Maisel, Harvey Stein, among others.

Neil's photographs are in the collections of the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.; The Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego, California; Baltimore Museum of Art in Maryland; New York Historical Society; New York Public Library; and the Cleveland Clinic. His corporate clients include Johns Hopkins Hospital, Fidelity Investments, Becton Dickinson, the Bloomberg School of Public Health, T. Rowe Price,and the Maryland Stadium Authority.

Neil is currently represented by C. Grimaldis Gallery in Baltimore, Bonni Benrubi Gallery in New York, and Panoramic Images in Chicago. His photographs have been shown in New York, Miami, and Baltimore.

Larry Doyle is one funny guy. Deliriously Happy is his new collection of short humor writing covering everything from childhood to evil genius, pets to parenthood, Mark Twain to Twitter. A former writer for The Simpsons, Doyle works in showbiz and writes funny pieces for The New Yorker. He is the author of I Love You, Beth Cooper, which won the 2008 Thurber Prize for American Humor and was made into a major motion picture, and Go, Mutants!

Reception with Best-selling Author Ben Mezrich

Ben Mezrich, author of the best-selling novel The Accidental Billionaires (the basis of the Academy Award nominated film The Social Network) releases a new book, Sex on the Moon. One of his first stops during his book tour was the Pratt Library and a private reception with members and guests of the Pratt Contemporaries. 

Ben Mezrich, a Harvard graduate, is the author of eleven books, including the international bestseller Bringing Down the House, which spent sixty-three weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and was made into the movie 21, starring Kevin Spacey. He is a columnist for Boston Common and a contributor to Flush magazine.

An Evening with Chef Galen Sampson: Let the Ingredients Sing
Local ingredients, Local Food with Dogwood Restaurant's Executive Chef

Chef Galen Sampson will cook while talking about using fresh, local and seasonal ingredients to create delightful regional cuisine.  He'll also discuss Dogwood's social mission to transform lives one plate at a time by providing training, opportunity and paid employment to individuals who are transitioning from addiction, incarceration, homelessness and/or underemployment.
 
Award-winning Chef Galen Sampson grew up in Reisterstown, MD and has worked with top chefs in some of the finest restaurants in the country including: the five-star Stein Eriksen Lodge in Utah; the Sonesta Lodge in Bermuda; and the Harbor Court Hotel in Baltimore. During his tenure at the Harbor Court Hotel, the hotel achieved its Five-Star, Five-Diamond rating. The Academy of Hospitality and Tourism named Galen its Chef of the Year in 2005 and in 2008, he was featured as a CNN Hero for his work providing culinary training to individuals in transition. He is now living his dream: running and owning his own restaurant and having the opportunity to train others in the profession he loves.

Reception with Author Bill German

In Under Their Thumb, Bill German discusses his ups and downs with the "world's greatest rock and roll band." He chronicles how he befriended the Stones (while just a teenager) and how he became the band's official historian for almost two decades.He traveled the world with them, stayed at their homes, and witnessed their concerts, recording sessions, and in-fights. German will share some of his humorous Stones anecdotes, as well as some never-before-seen photos.

Bill German co-authored The Works with guitarist Ron Wood and wrote about the Stones for Rolling Stone and Spin.

Walter Wick Reception and Exhibition Tour

Love the "I Spy" books? Enjoy a private reception for members and guests of the Pratt Contemporaries in the Sculpture Court, followed by a tour of the new exhibit, Walter Wick: Games, Gizmos, and Toys in the Attic."

Walter Wick: Games, Gizmos and Toys in the Attic is the first museum retrospective of award-winning author and photographic illustrator Walter Wick. Author of Can You See What I See? and co-creator of the I Spy book series loved by millions of children and adults around the world, Wick has a keen interest in puzzles, games, science and illusions. The exhibition will feature a selection of Wick’s early photographs, which provided a foundation for the artist’s interest in illusions. It will include several of the handcrafted, meticulously detailed installation models accompanied by his large-format color photographs that are the illustrations in his children’s books. Together they will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the artist’s creative process and a window into the puzzles and illusions for which he is so well known. The exhibition will include two models and photographs from Wick’s 2008 book, Can You See What I See on a Scary, Scary Night?, inspired in part by the Walters' Chamber of Wonders, as well as the debut of models and photographs from his newest book, Treasure Ship.

Grant Wahl is the author of The Beckham Experiment: How the World's Most Famous Athlete Tried to Conquer America (now available on paperback). In twelve years at Sports Illustrated, senior writer Grant Wahl has written thirty-one cover stories and more than two hundred articles while covering five World Cups, three Olympics, and twelve NCAA basketball tournaments. Wahl has won four Magazine Story of the Year awards, given by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. He lives in Baltimore with his wife.

Reception with Wes Moore

You've seen him on Oprah and read about him in the Baltimore Sun. Now see author and Baltimore native Wes Moore at the Central Library on Tuesday, May 18, 6:30pm, discussing his much talked about book, The Other Wes Moore.

The Other Wes Moore is about two kids with the same name, living in the same city. One grew up to be a Rhodes Scholar, decorated combat veteran, White House Fellow, and business leader. The other is serving a life sentence in prison for felony murder. Violence, drugs, single mothers, uninformed choices, all played critical roles in their development, but they have radically different futures. Here is the story of two boys and the journey of a generation.

Prior to the public event there will be a reception exclusively for members of the Pratt Contemporaries starting at 5:30pm.

Grant Wahl  -  Sports Illustrated Writer and Author

Meet Sports Illustrated writer and author of "The Beckham Experiment: How the World's Most Famous Athlete Tried to Conquer America" at a private reception. Grant will then give a public reading from his new book about famed soccer player David Beckham in wheeler Auditorium. Whether you are a sports fan or want to learn more about Posh Spice's second half, this is an event you won't want to miss! The Beckham Experiment is a no-holds-barred account of ego clashes and epic winless streaks, rivalries and resentments, big gambles and great expectations, cultural and class collisions, and ultimately the volatile mix of celebrity and professional sports. Reception with Ben Mezrich

Ben Mezrich will discuss his new book, The Accidental Billionaires:  The Founding of Facebook - a Tale of Sex, Money, Genius and Betrayal.  Mezrich tells a captivating story of betrayal, vast amounts of cash, and two friends who revolutionized the way humans connect to one another-only to have an enormous falling out and never speak again. The film, The Social Network, was based on The Accidental Billionaires.

Mezrich is also the author of Bringing Down the House which was made into the film 21 starring actors Kevin Spacey and Laurence Fishburne.

David O. Stewart, talks about his book, Impeached: The Trial of President Andrew Johnson and the Fight for Lincoln's Legacy. 

Impeached challenges more than acentury of writing about the Senate trial of President Andrew Johnson in 1868, the first presidential impeachment. Bringing to bear his experience as lead defense counsel in a Senate impeachment trial in 1989, and as a criminal defense lawyer, David Stewart reveals the reasons why Johnson should and could have been removed from office, as well as the multiple bribery schemes hatched by the president's supporters to buy enough Senate votes to keep him in the White House.

David Stewart is the author of The Summer of 1787: The Men Who Invented the Constitution.

Michael Pollan talks about his most recent book, In Defense of Food.

Michael Pollan's last book, The Omnivore's Dilemma, launched a national conversation about the American way of eating. Now In Defense of Food shows us how to change it, one meal at a time. Pollan proposes a new answer to the question of what we should eat that comes down to seven simple but liberating words: "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." He shows us how we can start making thoughtful food choices that will enrich our lives, enlarge our sense of what it means to be healthy, and bring pleasure back to eating.

Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn talk about their new book, Race Course:  Against White Supremacy

In Race Course, Ayers and Dohrn discuss white supremacy and its troubling endurance in American life. They point to unexamined bigotry in the criminal justice system, election processes, war policy, and education, and explore their own confrontations with authorities during the Vietnam era and offer personal stories about their lives today.

Bill Ayers is a distinguished professor education at the University of Illinois at Chicago; Bernardine Dohrn is the director of the Children and Family Law Justice Center and a clinical associate professor of law at Northwestern University School of Law.

The Enoch Pratt Free LIbrary welcomes PBS host and award-winning journalist and writer Tavis Smiley to discuss and sign copies of his new book, Accountable:  Making America as Good as Its Promise. Accountable provides real-life examples of how crucial issues, including health care, education, the economy, unequal justice, and the environment, manifest themselves in our communities.

Reception and Book Signing for Randall Kennedy

Meet the Harvard Law School Professor and author at a private reception. 
In his new book, Sellout:  The Politics of Racial Betrayal, Randall Kennedy grapples brilliantly and judiciously with "selling out," a subject of much anxiety and acrimony in black America.
Randall Kennedy is the Michael R. Klein Professor of Law at Harvard University.  He is a member of the bars of the District of Columbia and the US. Supreme Court, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a member of the American Philosophical Associtation.
