Excitement down at the Inner Harbor was in full swing when Commander Kimsey and the crew of the USS Maryland presented Pratt CEO Carla Hayden copies of the book Yardarm to Yardarm—(also titled The War of 1812 and the Rise of the U.S. Navy) by Mark Collins Jenkins and David A. Taylor—in a special ceremony in front of the USS Constellation while ships arrived in the Inner Harbor for the Star-Spangled Sailabration.

The United States Navy donated 20 copies of the book and each branch of the Enoch Pratt will receive one of the donated copies. The book was published in March 2012 and commissioned by the U.S. Navy in commemoration of the bicentennial of the War of 1812, a war that helped shape what has become one of the world’s great military organizations. Through hundreds of archival photographs, rare memorabilia, and personal reminiscences, the book captures the spirit of a burgeoning nation as it found itself again at war with the British Empire, and in the process details the humble beginnings of a vast, powerful naval force. Even before the publish date, this project that began as a simple history book commemorating the events of the War of 1812 has already received accolades. The book is published under the two different titles, with two different cover treatments. Yardarm to Yardarm is being used for U.S. Navy ceremonial purposes; The War of 1812 and the Rise of the U.S. Navy for bookstore distribution by the National Geographic Society and Random House.

Here's a link to the book in our catalog in case anyone wants to put a copy on reserve at their local library: It was fun seeing some sailor men and women checking out the library and the streets of Baltimore in their white suits and hats. Hope we made as good an impression on them as they did on us.
