BALTIMORE – As Baltimore students head back to school this September, the Enoch Pratt Free Library wants to make sure that all children have the most important school supply of all – a library card!
Owning a library card provides students the resources they need to compete academically. Public libraries like the Pratt provide students free access to databases of news articles, encyclopedias and test preparation materials, as well as homework help and resources. In addition, public libraries are the number one access point for free Internet access, an important resource for families without access at home when 96 percent of school districts require students to use the Internet to complete their homework.
Activities at the Pratt Library during Library Card Sign-up Month include a “Get Carded” campaign spotlighting Baltimore and Maryland celebrities, athletes and lawmakers including Baseball Hall of Famer Cal Ripken, Jr., author Laura Lippman, surgeon Dr. Ben Carson, Orioles player Adam Jones and many more holding a blown up library card. Every day in September we will be unveiling who “Gets Carded.” Also, Maryland’s own Cal Ripken Jr. is the National Honorary Chair of Library Card Sign-up Month.
“Today’s libraries provide students of all ages with the tools they need to succeed,” said Carla D. Hayden, Chief Executive Officer of the Enoch Pratt Free Library. “But nowadays, it gives you more than just books. Your Pratt Library card is your ticket to exciting new and free services. It now allows you to check-out e-Readers and also gives you access to thousands of e-books available for download from our website. In tough economic times, your library card also gives you free access to programs, computers, homework help, assistance with resumes and job searches, accurate financial information, adult education courses, CDs, DVDs and so much more.”
Getting a library card is easy. Anyone who lives or owns property in Maryland is eligible for a free Pratt Library card.
Library Card Sign-up Month is a time when the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all.
