A Smorgasbord of Tasty Tales

Every April the Enoch Pratt Free Library hosts a fairy tale month filled with a variety of creative activities throughout out the city. This year the Central Children’s Department presented a “Smorgasbord of Tasty Tales” for the third and fourth grade students from The Midtown Academy. The food-centric stories included the following:

“Mary Culhane and the Dead Man” from Molly Bang’s The Goblin’s Giggle and other stories, presented by Selma Levi, notably contains a yummy oatmeal and blood delicacy.

In The Three Wishes by Margot Zemach, as told by Julie Saylor Sandhaus, the story hinges on a string of sausages.

The original Hansel and Gretel by the Brothers Grimm, told by James McGlothlin, has a witch’s house made out of cake, bread, and sugar, not gingerbread.

The Rooster Prince of Breslov by Ann Redisch Stampler, presented by Kelli Ostrom, incorporates challah, special braided bread eaten on Sabbath and holidays, into its Yiddish story of a spoiled prince.

The interactive (and rather rude) The Boy from the Dragon Palace: a folktale from Japan by Margaret Read Macdonald, told by Selma Levi, uses shrimp cooked with vinegar and sugar to make its greedy point.

Alas, we could find no commercially produced cookies that included blood in the recipe so, after the mouthwatering tales, the children all received “plain” oatmeal sandwich cookies as a treat.
We recommend these tasty tales for foodies of all ages.
