Summer Reading for Adults Join NowEvery summer has a story, and this year each location of the Enoch Pratt Free Library is bringing its own unique twist to the Adult Summer Reading Program.

A number of the branches hosted Adult Summer Reading Kick-off events. Southeast Anchor Library's Read-In featured John Waters' Shock Value (specifically, an excerpt from the chapter "Baltimore, Maryland - Hairdo Capital of the World"), "Recollections of Notable Cops" from The Vintage Mencken, Hunter S. Thompson's Hell's Angels, Pamela Druckerman's Bringing Up Bebe, and David Mamet's Bambi vs. Godzilla: On the Nature, Purpose, and Practice of the Movie Business (read by adult librarian Morgan Stanton). Shanti Dickson read from a favorite book titled The Untelling by Tayari Jones.

The staff at the Orleans Street Branch read poems from the poetry collection at the top of each hour. Some of the featured poets were Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks, Nikki Giovanni, and Richard Wilbur. Langston Hughes' "The Negro Speaks of Rivers" and "I, Too" (read from Bryan Collier's I Too, Am America picture book) were well received. At the beginning of each reading staff talked about the Adult Summer Reading Program's rules and incentives, and at the end of some of the pieces library visitors clapped and said thank you. Zandra Campbell, the Manager of the Orleans Street Branch, said, "I think it surprises people to hear us reading in the open throughout the day and the poems were well received. One gentleman recited a poem as Ms. Brightful read it. He said that he learned it while he was in elementary school."

Some of the other branches took the Groundbreaking Reads theme in a green direction. The Brooklyn Branch staff hosted a program to name their chia pet. Stop by and meet "Captain Puff!"

At the Reisterstown Road Branch, we created some book planters as part of the Groundbreaking Reads theme. Check out how to make your own book planters on the Apartment Therapy blog.
