Every summer, teens at the Pennsylvania Avenue Branch can expect two sure things: teen summer reading, and a variety of fun programs. These programs nurture teens’ interest in arts and crafts, community, and culture. Past programs have included African dancing, dining etiquette, caricature drawing, and modeling.

Ring made with gree, gold and purple beads. This June, teens took the opportunity to express their creativity in two programs, Jewelry Making and Temporary Tattoos.

On June 18, several girls learned to create beaded rings. The presenter, Elaine Foster, demonstrated the technique she uses to add beads to the wire. Then, each girl was given a plate and allowed to select beads in the color of her choice. Ms. Foster worked patiently with each of the girls when they needed assistance, especially the younger ones.

Over the next hour, the girls crafted their rings, which featured a variety of shapes and colors. Each ring reflected the individual styles of the girls who participated.

The following Monday teens, kids and adults learned about airbrushing tattooing. A local airbrush artist from Airbrush Unlimited Group created temporary tattoos.

Some of the tattoos selected include Dora the Explorer, dragons, cherries, flaming dice, flowers, and even a pirate ship flag. So far, Temporary Tattoos has been the most popular teen program this summer.

There is much more summer fun in the weeks ahead. Stop by the branch to see what Pennsylvania Avenue has to offer.
