Get Fit @ Your Library began at the Waverly Branch library three years ago. The line dancing classes led by Frances Spears and Ann Marie Lalmansingh, staff at the branch, whose commitment to promoting innovative programs for the community, has contributed to the long term success of the program. In the beginning there was a small group, 8-10 regulars, that has now grown to a weekly average of 30 participants.

line dance wvr xmas 1Fitness classes at the library a few years ago would have been considered a wild idea, but today with the First Lady's "Get Moving" campaign having nationwide appeal, it was not hard to convince the staff and public that line dancing was a good idea. We believed that line dancing was another way to get the adults and seniors in our community moving and to stretch our programming beyond the traditional limits. The added bonus is that the line dancing workout at the library is FREE!

The music that inspires the dancers ranges from hip-hop to reggae and African beats. It's the rhythm that keeps us moving and burning calories. We keep it fresh too by incorporating new dances with the old ones, we never want the workouts to become predictable and boring. We encourage dancers to move their arms, shoulders, and hips while dancing to increase their heart rate. But, most of all we just have fun.

line dance wvr xmas 2Everyone feels comfortable in the group; classes consist of adults (male & female) and seniors (we have a regular 80-year-old)! It has become a community meeting event--new friendships have formed while other friends have reunited. The group is self-sustaining; they do outreach in the community to recruit new members, class members gave a demonstration at Stadium Place. For those who are interested, we celebrate the group's anniversary each July and in December we make merry with a festive holiday gathering. Line dancing at the library is fitness for the body and soul.
