BEFORE STARTING LIBRARY RESEARCH
Begin genealogical research at home by talking to the oldest members of your family and searching family records. Once all family records - including bibles, marriage licenses, birth and death certificates and other existing records - have been found, the next step is to locate introductory books, videos or web sites on the process of doing further genealogical research.
Genealogical research at the Central Library/State Library Resource Center of the Enoch Pratt Free Library is available in three departments: the Social Science and History Department (1st floor, north side), the Maryland Department (2nd floor, Annex) and the Periodicals Department (1st floor, south side)

CENSUS (FEDERAL AND STATE)

The Maryland Department has microfilm of the decennial United States Census for Maryland from 1790 to 1930 with the exception of the 1890 Census, the originals of which were destroyed by fire. However, a useful substitute - a special schedule from 1890 that enumerates Union veterans and widows of Union veterans of the Civil War - is held in the Periodicals Department. The Periodicals Department also holds slave schedules from 1850 and 1860.

CITY DIRECTORIES AND TELEPHONE DIRECTORIES
The Maryland Department holds Baltimore City Directories in microfilm and microfiche from 1796 to 1964. Baltimore City Directories list all employed adult men and women, and women who had been recently widowed (accounting, therefore, for approximately 40% of the city’s population), by name, occupation and address. The Maryland Department also has Baltimore telephone directories from 1898 to 1972 on microfilm, and all Maryland telephone directories from 1976 to date on microfiche.
Additional resources that may prove useful are reverse address directories, more commonly referred to as “criss-cross” directories. These volumes list streets rather than names in alphabetical order, and have the names of residents within each street name by house number. The Maryland Department has criss-cross directories for Baltimore City from 1932 to the present and for the surrounding counties for varying years.
The Periodicals Department has microfiche of city directories from some other American cities. Dates range between 1765 and 1865; specific cities and dates are listed on the Periodicals department home page: http://www.prattlibrary.org/locations/periodicals/index.aspx?id=4340.

African American Biographical Database
Gathered from biographical dictionaries and other sources, AABD features scanned pages of full text articles about thousands of African Americans. Many images are included.
Ancestry Library Edition
Accesses over one billion names (records) and searches more than 4,000 databases with new databases added daily. Includes birth, marriage, death, military service, and census records.
Biography and Genealogy Master Index
This database indexes biographical sketches found in both current and older reference sources.
Heritage Quest
U.S. Census records (1790 – 1930), PERSI (index to articles in genealogy magazines), and the full texts of more than 25,000 local histories can be searched on this database. HeritageQuest Online is also accessible from home computers for Maryland residents with a library card.
ProQuest Historical Newspapers
The text of five national newspapers dating from the middle of the 19th century to the late 20th century can be searched in the database. Titles currently include The New York Times, Washington Post, Christian Science Monitor, Chicago Tribune and Wall Street Journal.

The Maryland Department of the Pratt Library has many local genealogical resources for researching Maryland families. By using city directories, telephone books, census records, passenger lists for the Port of Baltimore from 1820-1952, biography files, vertical files and the many county histories; vital clues to a Maryland family may be discovered. In the collection are many books covering church records, cemetery records, indexes to marriages, death notices, obituaries, wills and other pertinent topics for various counties and time periods.
