All that Jazz!

Jazz - MyersSince April is Jazz Appreciation Month, this is a great time to remember some of the great jazz artists of the past, especially Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Duke Ellington, who were all born in this month. Celebrate the 95th anniversary of Billie Holiday's birth on April 7th by checking out her autobiography, Lady Sings the Blues, or Becoming Billie Holiday, a novel that tells the singer's story through a series of poems. On April 25th, remember Ella Fitzgerald by flipping through The Ella Fitzgerald Companion. And, let Reminiscing in Tempo take you back to the days of Duke Ellington, born on April 29th. Let's really jazz it up this month!

Clear as a Bell

Telephone

Can you imagine life without telephones? March is a great time to remember the man who played a major role in bringing the telephone to the world. You could celebrate Alexander Graham Bell's birthday on March 3rd or honor the anniversary of the transmission of the first telephone message on March 10th by checking out some books from the Walbrook Branch. Try a book about Alexander Graham Bell, one about telephones, or even one about inventions of all sorts. Then call a friend to share the amazing things you learn!

Winter Olympics

Tacky Winter GamesThe 21st Winter Olympics are well under way! Now is a great time to check out some books about winter sports or those athletes who have made their marks on Olympic history. Children can enjoy Helen Lester's Tacky and the Winter Games or Joan Lowery Nixon's Gus and Gertie and the Lucky Charms. And everyone can find inspiration in the stories found in Olympic Black Women and Grace and Glory: A Century of Women in the Olympics. Go, Team USA!
