Demographic Data for the State and Counties
Internet Sites
Data from the 2010 census can be found using the Census Bureau’s American Fact Finder site. For basic statistics, such as the population for a state, county or place, use the "Quick Start" box in the middle of the page and enter a topic (for example, "Asian") and a place (for example, "Baltimore City, MD" or "Catonsville, MD") in the geography box and hit "Go".
The Census Bureau's State and County QuickFacts site generates recent demographic, business and geography data for each state and county in the U.S.
For more detailed (or more recent) demographic characteristics, such as income and poverty, educational attainment, family structure, homeownership rates, occupations and commuting trends, use the American Community Survey. This is an ongoing survey by the Census Bureau and it has replaced the decennial census as the source for updated socioeconomic and housing data. However, the data is not directly comparable to the data from the 2000 census.
American Community Survey data is released annually, but data for places with a population between 20,000 and 65,000 is reported as a 3-year average rather than for a single year, and for places with a population below 20,000 is reported as a 5-year average. Data is available from American Fact Finder or from the Maryland Department of Planning.
Profiles for each county with data back to 1970 and projections to 2030 can be found through the Department of Planning's Socio-Economic Profiles page.
