Journals & Magazines 

 

Journals are scientific or academic periodicals containing scholarly articles, reports, or studies that have been reviewed by other professionals in the subject field prior to publication. Articles in journals usually include an abstract at the beginning and a bibliography, works cited, or list of resources at the end.

Examples: JAMA, Journal of African American Studies, Journal of Psychology 

Magazines are periodicals containing articles, stories, and pictures on topics such as business, fashion, music, or national news.

Examples: Ebony, Rolling Stone, Time

Find Periodicals in Databases:

Search our Electronic News Stand by title or subject to find out which journals and magazines are in our databases. These databases are conveniently accessible outside the library to all Pratt library card holders. 

Find Periodicals Held From 1990 - Present: 

The Periodicals List (arranged alphabetically by title) shows magazines and journals held by the Periodicals Department from 1990 to the present. To locate a specific title, click "Edit" on the toolbar of your Web browser and select "Find on this Page." In the box that appears, enter the name of the periodical you are searching for and click on "Next."

The Periodicals List does not include magazines and journals held by other library departments, so if you don't see a particular title, check the Pratt library catalog.

Find Periodicals Held Before 1990: 

The Pratt library catalog lists journals and magazines owned by the library prior to1990; find them by selecting “periodical title” from the drop-down search box. 

Search Indexes:

You can find the full text of many periodical articles in our databases. Searching for a particular topic? Visit our index page to see a list of paper indexes available in the Periodicals Department.

 

Periodicals in Other Libraries

 

WorldCat 

To find out which libraries hold a particular magazine or journal, type the title into the search box and click on the “Search everything” button. From the “Narrow by Format” list on the left-hand side of the results page, select “Journal, magazine” to pull up the relevant title. Click on the desired title from the list to view the record. Type your zip code into the “Enter your location” box and click on “Find libraries” to see a list of nearby libraries that carry this periodical.

The DOAJ offers (for free!) full-text articles from peer-reviewed scientific and scholarly journals.

Education Resources Information Center 

ERIC provides unlimited access to more than 1.3 million bibliographic records of journal articles and other education-related materials. If available, links to full-text documents are included.
