Job and Career Information Center Newsletter
Greetings,
Are you busy trying to network? Talking with lots of people to see if you can get any job leads. Networking is a great way to meet people and learn about potential opportunities -- whether they are volunteering, job search techniques, or a job lead.
Informational interviewing is another great way to network. Unlike in a typical job interview, you are the one who asks the questions in an informational interview. It is a great way to gather information about a specific career track, get advice as to where to look for jobs, and learn about the work environment. Going into an informational interview, you should have questions prepared. While you may not get information about a specific job, it can provide you with a lot of information about a specific organization and with advice for your job search.
How do you find someone to be the subject of an informational interview? Just ask! Most people would be happy to share information and consider it a compliment to be asked about their profession. Check out local business or organizations that are in your career field and see if anyone would be available to talk with you about their job. This can also be an opportunity to network with your friends and family -- does anyone know of someone that you could talk to about your career field?
It never hurts to ask -- the worst that can happen is that they say no. Try and try again!
Best wishes with your job search,
Rebecca Sullivan
