Summer Reading and Read Down Fines

The reading that you do during the summer can also count toward earning Pratt Bucks for taking fines off your library card. Ask your librarian for more information.

Events at the Library

Watch for free special events all summer long. The library isn’t just about books and reading, it’s about learning, fun, and community. Any time you spend listening to stories in programs can count towards your Summer Reading.

In Partnership with the Baltimore Campaign for Grade-Level Reading

The Pratt Library's Summer Reading Program for kids is presented in partnership with the Baltimore Campaign for Grade-Level Reading and Baltimore City Public Schools. In addition to your local Pratt Library, you can participate through SummerREADS at some Weinberg School Libraries and your local rec center. Stop by any site for more information.

Track your Progress and Earn Prizes

For kids ages birth through preschool

How it works
How to earn prizes
  • Every 3 weeks of the program, there is a new prize. In order to earn the prize, you and your child will need to have checked off 12 days of reading or sharing a literacy activity together in your reading log.
  • Bring the log with the 12 completed days back to the library during that 3 weeks to earn the prize.
  • Once the first 3 weeks are over, that prize is gone and there’s a new prize for the next three weeks and so on.
Get to the reading goal and then keep reading!
  • The ultimate goal is to read or share literacy activities for 35 days during the summer. Once you meet that goal, your child gets a free t-shirt and four free tickets to the Aquarium on Library Night.
  • Keep reading! At 50 days, your child can earn a bonus prize! All prizes are only available while supplies last.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Summer Reading Program, anyway?

Simply put, the Summer Reading Program is a way to encourage everyone to read all summer long. As an extra incentive, you can even earn prizes along the way for the reading that you do! Kids are at a particular risk of losing some of the knowledge they gained during the school year if they don’t read during the summer months. This program can help make sure they’re on track when they head back to school!

Is the Summer Reading Program a camp where I can bring my child?

No. The Summer Reading Program is designed to encourage independent reading. Kids can keep track of the reading that they do at home, at the library, anywhere, and in turn, they can earn prizes.

Is the Summer Reading Program only for kids?

No! Everyone ages birth and up can participate. There’s a program for kids, teens, and adults with different rules and prizes for each. We consider kids to be from birth to entering 5th grade in the fall. Teens are entering 6th through 12th grade. The adult program includes everyone else.
