How to Start a Nonprofit Organization

Have you ever thought about starting a nonprofit or formalizing an existing organization into an IRS recognized charity?Learn more about the pros and cons, and the process and costs involved in being a nonprofit.

Presenter: Heather Comstock has been involved in the Maryland nonprofit sector for over 10 years and has been involved with the start-up of several nonprofit organizations. Heather currently provides nonprofit consulting services, volunteers as a Peer Reviewer for Maryland Nonprofit's Standards for Excellence program and serves as a board member on two local nonprofits.

Fundraising in Diverse Communities (Brown Bag Lunch Program)

Today, more and more nonprofit organizations are looking at ways to broaden their donor base to include diverse groups while increasing their philanthropic support. In each diverse community (Hispanic, African American, Asian American, GLBT) there are specific motivations for giving – whether out of a sense of duty, religious affinity, helping family or to create a presence within their own communities and other organizations, diverse groups have helped to shape philanthropy.  At this session, you will explore ways to engage, cultivate and identify best practices to increase participation by diverse communities in your non-profit organizations. Hear what some of our area fundraisers are saying about how their organizations serve, engage and fundraiser to diverse communities.
