Mencken Day

honoring the memory, career and bequest of Henry Louis Mencken

The Mencken Room is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

New Exhibits: "H. L. Mencken and The Prejudices;" "Mencken and the Baltimore Evening Sun: An Occasional Exhibit;" "My Life as Author and Editor by H. L. Mencken, Edited by Jonathan Yardley;" and "Mencken on Mencken, edited by S. T. Joshi."

Mencken Society annual meeting, 10:15 a.m., Wheeler Auditorium - "The Saturday Night Club on Sunday." On Sunday, April 11, 2010, the Concert Artists of Baltimore gave a concert of music from the Pratt Library's Saturday Night Club collection. Pratt staff member David Donovan will play and discuss excerpts from the concert featuring original compositions by Saturday Night Club members, as well as symphonic music, waltzes, and novelties. Marion Elizabeth Rogers will talk about the newly published H. L. Mencken: Prejudices, The Complete Series (Library of America) which she edited.

The 2010 Mencken Memorial Lecture, 2:30 p.m., Wheeler Auditorium - "The Press Then and Now: From Mencken to the Internet," by Jonathan Yardley, book critic of the Washington Post.

Prior to joining the Washington Post in 1981, Jonathan Yardley was book editor for the Greensboro (N.C.) Daily News, the Miami Herald, and the Washington Star. In 1968-69 he was a Nieman Fellow in Journalism at Harvard University. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Distinguished Criticism in 1981. Yardley is the author of six books and editor of a posthumous memoir by H. L. Mencken and a collection of short stories by Ring Lardner.

The Ivy Bookshop will be selling copies of Library of America's new edition of H. L. Mencken: Prejudices and Monday Morning Quarterback by Jonathan Yardley. 

A reception will be held in the Poe Room following Jonathan Yardley's lecture.
