R. Dwayne Betts
talks about his new book, A Question of Freedom: A Memoir of Survival, Learning, and Coming of Age in Prison
At age 16, Dwayne Betts was convicted of carjacking and spent nine years in Virginia prisons. While incarcerated, he read a book a night and began writing. Since his release, he has taught poetry in public schools and founded the YoungMenRead book club for boys. His first book of poetry won the 2009 Beatrice Hawley Award. Dwayne Betts graduated with high honors from the University of Maryland, College Park in May and was the student commencement speaker.
The Ivy Book Shop will sell copies of Dwayne Betts' book following the program.
