Since 1987 Nancy Pelosi has represented California's 8th District, which includes most of the city of San Francisco, in the House of Representatives. Elected by her colleagues in 2002 as Democratic Leader of the House of Representatives, Pelosi is the first woman to lead a major party in Congress and, as of 2007, the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House of Representatives.
