Resources and Services for Persons with Special Needs
Services for People who are Blind or People with Visual Disabilities
- Fiction and non-fiction large print books are housed in the Fiction Department. Some branches also have large print collections and others can borrow from Central.
- Books-on-Tape are available at all Pratt Branches.
- The following assistive devices for persons with visual disibilities are available at the Central Library only:
- A Telesensory Vantage CCD
A machine which magnifies any kind of printed or written material can also be used. Not only does it magnify, but depending upon the individual's type of vision problem, the screen can be changed from black letters on a white field to white letters on a black field.
- Computers with assistive software to access the Internet, all the Pratt databases, and Microsoft Office. ZoomText software magnifies and makes computer screens audible. Earphones are included.
- Magnifying glasses are available in several departments for public use.

Services for People who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
- Regular telephone service is provided through TTYs. The TTY telephone numbers are:
- Central Library - Telephone Reference Service, 410-396-3761
- Northwood, 410-396-7061
- These TTY numbers can be dialed for any incoming library related questions. A Help Desk is available for home computer connection problems when trying to connect to Pratt and Sailor, the state's computer network. Their TTY number is 410-396-3761.
- The Sights and Sounds Department has sign language learning videotapes as well as a varied collection of closed caption videos and films for loan.
- For public events the Wheeler Auditorium has an audio loop amplification system which can help augment sound for those persons wearing hearing aides.
- The library also has access to a list of interpreters.
- Sign language interpretation for library programs on request.
