THE PRATT’S ALTERED BOOKS COMPETITION WINNERS

Competition attracted 43 entries including entries from Florida and New York

BALTIMORE  – The Enoch Pratt Free Library is excited to announce the winners of its first ever Altered Books Competition:

First place:  Susan Brandt, "Comfort Wrap"
Second Place: Jessica Kantorski, "The Merry Man"
Third Place: Kathryn Sowinski, "Sorrento"
Honorable Mention: Jacob R Bouknight, "Partyware"

The Altered Books Competition attracted 43 entries from across Maryland and several entries from artists in New York and Florida.  Most of the entries are currently on display in the Main Hall and Periodical Department of the Central Library.

An altered book is any book, old or new that has been recycled by creative means into a work of art.  They can be rebound, painted, cut, folded, added to, collaged in, rubber stamped, drilled or otherwise adorned.  Altered books may be as simple as adding a drawing or text to a page, or as complex as creating an intricate book sculpture.

“All the entries are masterpieces,” said Carla D. Hayden, Chief Executive Officer of the Enoch Pratt Free Library.  “From knitting shreds of pages together to skillfully carving a book, these artists have really out done themselves. This has been so successful we can’t wait to do this again next year.”

The Pratt’s Altered Books Competition started in August and culminated with a workshop at the Urbanite Magazine tent during the Baltimore Book Festival.

Support for the Pratt’s Altered Book Competition comes from Art for Life, Atomic Books, Bowerbox Press, Creative Alliance, Doubledutch Boutique, The Helmand Restaurant, Joe Squared Pizza, Landmark Theatres, Mr. Yogato, Post Typography, Tag Galleries, Tapas Teatro, Squidfire, Urbanite Magazine, Utrecht Art Supplies and The Wine Source.
