Those who attended last year’s bookfest can tell you its always great fun for the whole family. It is a grand community event where those who live in the Waverly community can come and socialize. There great books to browse through and buy to add to your personal collection. We also have a great silent auction and bake sale throughout the day.
Please join us for what is sure to be another enjoyable event here at Waverly. There will be activities for the kids which include storytelling, balloon sculpting, face painting, and craft making. There will also be a special crafting session for teens/adults led by Canda Mealo of Canda’s Crafts. For those who have books that they want to be appraised, David Ray of Baltimore local Allen’s Bookshop will be offering his book appraisal services.

You have to be living under a rock if you are not aware of the extremely popular teen fantasy series of books, Percy Jackson and the Olympians. The first book, The Lightning Thief, begins the story of a young teenage boy with ADHD who is having trouble in school and staying out of mischief until he finds out he is the son of the old Greek god, Poseidon. This sets off chains of events in which a young Perseus Jackson is framed by an unknown villain for stealing Zeus’ prized and powerful lightning bolt. A variety of monsters, including a Minotaur from Greek mythology, are after the young hero for the bolt; and to make matters worse Percy’s mom is being held for ransom in the underworld by Hades himself. Percy’s only hope is to train and learn to use his demigod abilities in a camp for demigods. In short, he is aided by friends, Grover (a satyr by the way) and demigod Annabeth, daughter of Athena. The trio embarks on a quest to save not only Percy’s mom but stop an impending war of the Greek gods.

What is the Compass?  It is our library newsletter. Each issue is jammed pack full of the latest info on current upcoming events. There is a section on readings and book signings. Hey are you in the mood for a movie? The Compass covers all the great free flicks you can check out at the Central Library or sometimes even locally. You can find out about great programs happening for the very young and the older crowd.

So pick up your copy of the Compass from your local library today. Don’t forget to ask your library staff about how you can have the Compass mailed to your home, school, or business. Just another way your Pratt library is working to bring the community great resources and information:)

HOW DO YOU JOIN THIS SUMMER READING GAME?

Go to your local library and ask to sign up for the reading program. Write down the titles of the books you read on your "Make a Splash/Make Waves" reading log. Go back to the library after reading 4 books to get a prize. Once you have read 8 books, you get a T-shirt. Many schools and camps participate in the library summer reading program as part of their activities. Check to see if your group is already participating.

Also for signing up for the summer reading program teens will receive a free copy of “Locomotion” by Jacqueline Woodson.Teens can win a bonus prize for writing a poem or drawing a picture about your life in Baltimore, a city on the water. There is also a special prize being given exclusively at your Waverly Branch Library for reading “Locomotion”  
                                                                                         

ADULTS! You can get into the fun too! For the first time at the Enoch Pratt Free Library adults can participate in an adult reading game we call Beach Blanket Bingo!

Hey, did you know that there’s a fun and exciting way to get a morning workout? We hope that you will join us on Mondays at Waverly for our line dance sessions. It is a great chance to meet people and best of all learn the latest line dance craze.

Recently the members of the Waverly Branch, Get Fit @ Your Library: Line Dancing Group met with senior housing residents at Stadium Place on Monday, April 24, 2010. A great time was had by all who participated in the Cha- cha slide, Zydeco slide, Temptations cha-cha, Baltimore Homey twist and many more line dances. The ladies had a great time socializing with each other and helping each other to learn the dances. Special thanks to Ms. James, Service Coordination Administrator of GEDCO. We look forward to meeting with residents for another session of line dancing fun.

It’s the beginning of May, which means that summer is almost here. Summer means no school, family vacation, camp, or maybe it is just a great time to relax. There is no better way of course to beat the summer heat then to crowd into a movie theater and catch the latest summer blockbuster. There is only one thing better than a great movie but a free great movie. Join us here at your Waverly Branch library for the ultimate free movie experience. The artwork may seem a bit dated compared to today’s hot manga artists. But it is the story and humor really drives this book. The reader will want to see what happens at the end of this manga series. Boys will love the adventure and girls will love the relationship that begins to unfold between Sakura & Rin-Ne. Hey Let’s hope it will not take over forty volumes to get to the end. I mean it did take InuYasha over forty to destroy Naruka.But that’s another book review!

 Celebrate poetry month with the Waverly Branch with our TXT Poetry Contest. TXT poetry is an exciting new way to write poems using cell phone texting lingo. Submit an original txt poem from April 1- April 24.

The teens really enjoyed the Fajita Fest. The presenter was nutrition educator, Mrs. Charese Robinson. The teens helped our nutrition expert prepare a healthy snack which included bell peppers, lettuce, onions, salsa, and shredded cheese. The youth participated in a discussion on healthy eating and how to prepare a tasty fajita. Most of the teens really enjoyed the hands-on work of slicing and cooking the veggies that would be used in the easy to make fajita recipe. The vegetables were topped with a homemade dressing and grilled on a skillet. The fajitas were delicious! Here are few snapshots from the event.

Calling all gaming warriors! One Wednesday in every month gamers gather for an exciting night of food, fun and competition. It is your chance to experience the fun of the bygone era of the arcade. Board games and cards are available to all participants. It is a chance to mingle and make new friends. Finally, let’s not forget the video games. There will be all the beautiful button mashing a player could want. For more info on this event please check out our calendar.

It all begins with the sweet scent of red, yellow, and green peppers. We dice them to perfection. Next, we cut up a couple of ripe juicy tomatoes. Maybe will throw in some onion, radish, of fresh shredded lettuce. Then, the veggies begin to sizzle on a grill. Once our vegetables are done we’ll wrapped them up in a tasty tortilla and maybe crown our veggies with cheese or salsa. Sounds like a great combination?

 We are calling all teens to join us for a fajita festival in celebration of National Nutrition Month. Come and learn about healthy snacks that you and friends can easily create and will love to eat. Our special guest presenter will be nutrition educator, Mrs. Charese Robinson. This program is being brought to your local Waverly Branch library courtesy of the University of MD Extension Food Supplement Nutrition Program.   THE WAVERLY ADULT BOOK CLUB

On October 14, 2006, First Sergeant Charles Monroe King was killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq. However, in 2005 Sergeant King began what would become a 200 page journal for his son in case he didn’t make it home from his service in Iraq. Sadly, Jordan was only seven months old when his father was killed. The love of his life and mother of young Jordan, is Pulitzer Prize New York Times editor Dana Canedy. A Journal for Jordan is a mother’s letter about the father her son lost and is filled with all the wisdom he left behind. It is a beautifully accounted love story and yet a tragedy about to mismatched lovers who lost each other all too soon.

Let’s face it! There’s no better way to beat the summer heat then catching the latest hit on the big screen. There are some that say the cinema is dead, but I say that nothing beats the sheer excitement of hearing the audience scream as a creature finds its next victim, or the contagious laughter of the audience watching the hysterical antics of America’s top comedians. There are movies that are meant to be seen on the big screen with all the great digital sound and grand picture quality. For those of you who saw Avatar you know what I am talking about. But, there is one thing that tops all of this cinema joy, and that one thing is free flicks!!! Last summer your Waverly Branch library brought all the fun of your local cinema to your local library. We plan to make this year's free movies at the Waverly Branch program even better. When you  stop by the library please take the time to fill out one of our summer movie surveys. Here at Waverly we want to bring our customers the best films and movie-going experience outside your local movie theater.

A long, long, long, time ago in a galaxy far away those familiar heroes of the force, the Jedi, were still fighting the villains of the force, the Sith. Haven’t we seen this story before? It is the same old tale that we see in everything and anything STAR WARS. After six films, cartoon shows, and hit video games George Lucas is still milking the cow that is Star Wars for all it’s got. I thought I would give the graphic novels a look over. Readers will find the Dark Horse comic book series Knights of the Old Republic very intriguing and sometimes even better than the Star Wars seen on the big screen.

Written by John Jackson Miller and artwork by Brian Ching and Travel Foreman, Knights of the Old Republic is the story of young Jedi in training, Zayne Carrick. Four thousand years before the birth of Luke Skywalker, Zayne and small time smuggler Gryph are framed for the murder of an innocent young Jedi. In a series of incredible action-packed events, our fugitive hero Zayne fights to clear his name and discovers a dark sinister force that threatens to destroy not only the Jedi but the Galactic Republic as well. Filled with plenty of great light saber battles and space drama, this Star Wars tale is excellently drawn and written. Knights of the Old Republic departs from other Star Wars stories by forcing its reader to cheer Zayne, who we learn is probably not the  best wielder of the Force, but wills to never give up on himself and his friends makes for exciting storytelling. The graphic novel has excellent artwork. Some of the action scenes takes up two entire pages! Fans of Star Wars will be pleased and newcomers will want to read volume after volume of this series.

One Wednesday night out each month graphic novel enthusiasts gather to discuss, watch, and review great anime shows. There is always exciting discussion about whats happening in the world of comic book art and entertainment. We talk about the manga and graphic novels that you are reading or the ones you must read. Anybody who claims to be gamer can not help but to smile when they hit an opponent with a fireball and land that final punch winning the match in the ever popular Street Fighter 2 arcade game. Back in the 90s Street Fighter 2 was just one of the many games that could be found in the many arcades located in various malls, amusement parks, pizzerias, and carry outs. The Arcade was a great place to check out the latest in gaming technology. It was a great place for a teen to socialize and meet up with friends. I can still hear the sounds of quarters going into the brightly lit arcade machines, the frustrated players hoping to get highest score. There was popcorn, candy, and pizza. All the fuel a teen needed. Teens today still long for this awesome social experience.

Here at Waverly guests get to experience all the fun of the old arcade one Wednesday out of every month, Teen Game Night. Refreshment is provided. Guests get compete in poplar arcade games, from fighting favorites to racing games. Guests can even play fun filled boardgames. So we hope to see you at our next night of gaming.

First meeting of the  Adult Book Club met on November 18, 2008.  The discussion was quite international. Tyler's  book featured two families, a chance meeting at the airport, who went on to build a friendship as their adopted Korean children grow. Readers loved reading about some of Baltimore's neighborhoods, Iranian culture, and family ties. What is it like to be an American?

What are you reading? Your Waverly Branch library has a brand new adult book club. Please come and discuss what books are keeping you awake at night. Or even tell us about books you would like to read. There will be great discussion amongst adults of different ages, cultural and social backgrounds. Refreshments will be provided. The club meets once every two months.

We will provide copies of selected titles for book club members and registration is free. You must complete the forms provided in the library and return it to the information desk. Soon to your local Waverly Branch. October is here and once again it is time for another heart-racing, teeth-chattering, and bone- shaking flick. This month's creature feature is the Spiderwick Chronicles.

The film is based on the beloved bestselling fantasy series by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi. In the film the Grace family, (Jared, his twin brother Simon, sister Mallory, and their mom), move from New York to a secluded old house owned by their great, great uncle Arthur Spiderwick. After a series of strange disappearances and accidents, for which Jared receives the blame, the family will soon discover that they are not alone but that, in fact, their house is filled with strange or often quite scary creatures.

Beginning October 18-24 for all teen readers,Teen Read Week is here!!! Your local library will be celebrating in a lot of special ways. We hope that all of our teens will take time out this week to read. This years's focus is science fiction and fantasy books. There are so many fun and exciting sci fi/ fantasy books. From the ever popular Harry Potter and the Twilight series to new hits like the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series and the Maximum Ride series. There are so many great books out there that take us to other worlds, the future or the past, space and beyond. Checkout exciting sci fi/ fantasy books for both boys and girls. 

Or maybe you thought about creating your own fantasy fiction. This would be a great week for you to share your own fantasy stories or ideas with someone. Create your own super heroes or redesign old favorites. Read up on places you may like to visit someday for a dream vacation. Teens will have a chance this week to design there own fantasy maps and postcards. The best ones will be display for all the public to see and may even end up being showcased on this blog. Come and create your own world!!! But, even if fantasy is not your thing, please take some time to read. Whether your listening to books on audio, reading about your favorite entertainers, or just plain curiousity, reading opens up a world of infinite possibilities for everyone.
